Patriots Left Furious After 35–6 Loss to Jaguars as Questions Over Officiating and Player Safety Overshadow the Score
The New England Patriots walked away from EverBank Stadium with far more than a 35–6 defeat to think about.
Jacksonville controlled the scoreboard, capitalized relentlessly on New England mistakes and turned a competitive first half into a one-sided result after halftime. Yet in the emotional aftermath of the game, the conversation surrounding the Patriots was not limited to turnovers, missed opportunities or offensive struggles.
Instead, a strongly worded postgame message centered on something deeper: respect, player safety and the responsibility of NFL officials to maintain a clear boundary between physical football and unnecessary conduct.
“Let me say this plainly — I’ve spent enough years in this sport to recognize just about every situation that can unfold on a football field,” the statement began. “And yet, what we witnessed tonight crossed into unfamiliar territory. That wasn’t football at its finest.”
It was a dramatic reaction following an equally frustrating afternoon for New England.
The Patriots and Jaguars went scoreless through the opening quarter, but the balance began to shift when New England quarterback Drake Maye lost possession. Jacksonville took advantage, with Trevor Lawrence eventually connecting with Josh Cameron for the game’s first touchdown.
New England responded after Marcus Jones intercepted Lawrence, but what could have been a momentum-changing touchdown drive instead produced only three points.
Maye appeared to score on a scramble, only for the play to be erased by a holding penalty. Another offensive penalty followed, and the Patriots were forced to settle for a field goal.
That sequence became symbolic of their entire afternoon.
Every time New England appeared close to generating momentum, something went wrong.
Jacksonville extended its advantage through a Lawrence touchdown pass to Jakobi Meyers, taking a 14–3 lead. The Patriots then mounted another threatening drive before halftime, reaching the Jaguars’ goal line with an opportunity to cut the deficit.
Instead, Maye was intercepted in the end zone by Travis Hunter.
A potential 14–10 game remained 14–3.
Then came the collapse.
Jacksonville produced a long second-half scoring drive that ended when Lawrence connected with Parker Washington for another touchdown. Only moments later, Maye threw another interception, and the Jaguars immediately converted the short field into seven more points.
In a matter of seconds, the game had gone from difficult to nearly impossible.
The Jaguars led 28–3.
New England eventually added another field goal, but Jacksonville answered again, with Bhayshul Tuten scoring from one yard to complete the 35–6 victory.
